Operating from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust is committed to providing a safe environment for all the patients and staff, both in the hospital and community settings. In order to build and maintain these high safety standards, it is essential that all of the staff have the appropriate skills, knowledge and ability to undertake their roles. To fulfil the key elements of the statutory (required by law) and mandatory (required by regulatory bodies or the Trust) safety obligations, this mobile E-Assessment serves as an open platform where both pre-employment and existing staff can access the study guide, subject-matter resources and take E-Assessments on any devices at work, home or on the go.
The concept of Mobile E-Assessment App is based on the current structure of the iPDF system and it will be serving as a critical body of iPDF product portfolio. With only one backend, the content can be updated in real-time on both mobile app and microsite simultaneously.
Launched in July, the junior doctors at Barts are the first user group to try this app. Receiving feedback featuring “Easy to use and navigate”, “very accessible” and “fast to complete the E-Assessment”, this mobile app is actively promoted across five hospitals by hundreds of staff at Barts Health NHS Trust.
With a team of 1 project manager, 1 mobile app developer, 1 front-end developer aand 1 back-end developer, together with the efficient support given by our client, this mobile app was delivered successfully on time and on budget. Our project manager Xiaoyue shared his great experience with working in an Agile team during our project retro session.
Changing requirements during the development process can be dreadful in the project management. This not only increases the overall development cost, but also potentially leads to the failure of project delivery. When managing the project, it’s critical to confirm the detail of each requirement with the client and ensure that both of you have the same understanding towards the requirements. Sometimes, paraphrasing or repeating client’s requirements is a good way to help clarify the requirements and keep both sides on the same page. Additionally, using wireframe or prototype to visualize the requirements is highly recommended. This particularly comes in handy when you speak with those clients without technology-related background.
Paying attention to detail not only helps prevent mistakes, but also makes the product a great success. When reflected on the development process, “details matter” is the rule of thumb in our work policy. From polishing the design of the button to adjusting the animation of a tab, we want to make sure that every single element inside of the mobile app is finely-designed, well-developed and thoroughly tested, so that users won’t suffer any tech glitch. Fortunately, our development team has a high tolerance for detail and make the quality of the deliverables “non-negotiable”.
Proactive thinking is a self-initiated approach of anticipating situations to control them. A project manager empowered by proactive thinking always keeps the project under control. It’s a common practice in business analysis and risk management. At business analysis stage, it is important to identify the major business problem that the project owner would like to tackle and try to think about all possible realistic scenarios where the requirements are generated. Apart form this, identifying the major project risks from technology perspective and business strategy perspective in the early phase is also a big step in eliminating the biases and mitigating risks prior to commencing the project.
The mobile E-Assessment app is available on both the App Store and Google Play. Click here to have a preview of the mobile app.
